Cyprus has a high degree of endemism although near to the mainland. There are two endemic species of bird. The Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca is an endemic migrant breeder which was previously thought to be a subspecies of the Pied Wheatear. The Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax is the other endemic species and the Scops Owl, Coal Tit, Jay and Short-toed Treecreeper occur as endemic sub-species.
