The most notable of these is the Greater Flamingo. These can be present in thousands if the water levels are right on the Salt Lakes. Many of the other overwintering species are common birds of northern Europe, for example, Common Shelduck, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Teal, European Robin, Common Stonechat, Meadow Pipit, White Wagtail, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Moustached Warbler and Bluethroat are usually present in suitable habitat. Greater Sand Plover spend the winter on selected rocky coasts while Finsch’s Wheatear are faithful to their regular winter haunts from late October till March. Black Redstart are widespread, and the resident Blue Rock Thrush and Serin populations are supplemented by winter migrants. One or two Wallcreeper are usually on the island but remain elusive.
