Migrants at Cape Greco today, 4th March 2016

It was quite windy at Cape Greco so there was little chance of finding any early sylvia warblers – the reason for my trip. But I was very pleased with what I did manage to see, especially as I finally found the Trumpeter Finches that had been avoiding me on all other recent visits there.

Apart from them, other birds around included two Tawny Pipit, 27 Isabelline Wheatear, four Northern Wheatear, a male Eastern ‘Siberian’ Stonechat, three singing male Cyprus Warbler, four Northern Wheatear, a male Desert Wheatear, two male Cretzschmar’s Bunting, a Eurasian Hoopoe, a male Blue Rock Thrush and a group of c40 Great Cormorant migrating E.

At Kermia Beach I found three Audouin’s Gull, two Yellow-legged Gull and a Caspian Gull.

Cape Greco area today 8th January 2016

For the first time in many years I was unable to get out birding during the first days of the year so my 2016 Cyprus year list started a week into the new year. I went around several sites on the east of the island and finished at Oroklini. No sign of the White-headed Ducks this evening but watching around 1000 White Wagtails come into roost as it got dark made up for it.

Highlights of the day were:

Agia Trias
Audouin’s Gull 2
Sandwich Tern 1
Greater Sand Plover 3
Grey Plover 5
Kentish Plover 2
Common Sandpiper 1

Cape Greco
Blue Rock Thrush 1m
Cyprus Warbler 1h
Long-legged Buzzard 1

Macronissos Beach
Eurasian Skylark 120+

Potamos Liopetriou
Common Kingfisher 1

Oroklini Beach
Armenian Gull 5

Oroklini Marsh
White Wagtail c1000 coming into roost in reeds at sunset
Black-winged Stilt 5
Northern Lapwing 6+
Cattle Egret c120
Northern Pintail 10
Common Starling 11

A few interesting species in Larnaca this morning, 1st July 2015

Less wind than on previous days in the Larnaca area as summer takes hold. Had a quick look around Cape Kiti and Larnaca Sewage Works this morning. Was surprised to find a European Bee-eater on the wires near Meneou. Just one Calandra Lark was seen at Pervolia with none heard singing today. Single Little Terns were at Meneou Pool and Larnaca Sewage Works where there was also a scruffy looking Whiskered Tern. An Audouin’s Gull was with several Yellow-legged Gulls on Spiros Pool.

Larnaca area 12th June 2015

Was out doing some survey work this morning in the Larnaca area and came across five juvenile Great Spotted Cuckoo being fed by Magpies – one Magpie had two – and another being fed by a Hooded Crow. Also several Cyprus Warbler family parties were about as was a juvenile Cetti’s Warbler. There were some pairs of European Roller around but no young birds yet. Several hundred Common Swift were over the fields around Kivisilli towards Teresfanou. A Long-legged Buzzard was over the road between Mazotos and Alaminos with two over Anglisides.

At the coast Spiros Pool is drying up although a couple Ruff and some Black-winged Stilt were there. On the beach a sub-adult Audouin’s Gull was feeding on what looked to be a red mullet and warding off raiding Yellow-legged Gulls.

Cape Greco 7th March 2015

Annoyed to dip on the Rock Sparrow today at Cape Greco but found some good migrants instead – both male Subalpine and Ruppell’s Warbler, a Black-headed Wagtail, a singing male Cyprus Wheatear, two Eurasian Hoopoe and at least six Isabelline Wheatear. A Common Quail was calling at Kermia Beach where I also saw two Audouin’s Gull and a Sandwich Gull.

At least thirty Slender-billed Gull were on Larnaca Airport Pools later and twenty six were flying east close to the sea off Spiros Beach. Thirteen Armenian Gull had flown over Cape Greco around midday.

Cape Greco this afternoon, 28th February 2015

An afternoon walk around Cape Greco in spring sunshine until a large dust cloud approached from the west around 4.30pm. Found five Audouin’s Gull on Kermia Beach and an assortment of wheatears – four Isabelline Wheatear, a male Northern Wheatear and a male and female Finsch’s Wheatear. Surprise bird was an immature Black Kite flying over the army camp.

Paralimni Lake, Cape Greco and Oroklini, Friday 6th February 2015

Due to road works I couldn’t get to my usual view point at Paralimni Lake today but despite that I managed to find the nine Ruddy Shelduck that have been there for several weeks now. A few Spur-winged Lapwing were flying around and there were at least two hundred Greater Flamingo on the Lake. A few Barn Swallow flew over and in Sotira village there were some Common Starling. The sea was very rough at the coastal sites I visited and at Agia Trias eight Grey Plover were together on the few rocks that were exposed together with a Greater Sand Plover. Three Sandwich Tern were fishing offshore and four Audouin’s Gull headed north – one a first winter bird.

I also found Audouin’s Gull at Kermia Beach (3) and Macronissos Beach (4) as well as one flying past Cape Greco. At least three male Cyprus Warbler were singing at Cape Greco. Stopping at Oroklini Marsh in the late afternoon it was good to see two male and four female Red-crested Pochard there as well as a Water Rail, three Northern Lapwing, 42 Spur-winged Lapwing, over 200 Cattle Egret coming to roost, a female Northern Pintail, a Common Redshank, several Barn Swallow and my first House Martin for the year.

Paralimni area and Oroklini Beach today, 28th February 2014

Started at Kermia Beach this morning where I found a Little Egret, two adult Audouin’s Gull, a Grey Plover, a Kentish Plover and a Greater Sand Plover. Around Cape Greco there were four Isabelline Wheatear, four Blue Rock Thrush, including a singing male, and a female Finsch’s Wheatear  –  which I was especially pleased to find as it had eluded me on other visits this winter. At Agia Trias there was a Common Sandpiper, a Common Kingfisher and two more Grey Plover but no sign of the Red-breasted Merganser that were there last week.

On Oroklini Beach in the late afternoon there were around twenty Armenian Gull, hundreds of Common Black-headed Gull, a single Mediteranean Gull and five Sandwich Tern.  I had been hoping to find a Little Gull there so I was pleased to see that there was one on Oroklini Marsh along with many Cattle Egret, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, Cattle Egret, Barn Swallow and a few Greater Flamingo.
