Some decent weather at last, 26th February 2015

With no rain forecast, for the first time in days,  I headed out with first stop Agios Sozomenos on the outskirts of Nicosia. There was still a male Finsch’s Wheatear present. Two sub-adult Bonelli’s Eagle, a Peregrine Falcon and a Long-legged Buzzard flew over and at the water treatment plant there were two Ferruginous Duck. Blackcap could be heard singing from many bushes as could several male Spectacled Warbler. I also saw two Long-legged Buzzard  flying over Panagia Stazousa on the way to Larnaca. A single Isabelline Wheatear and Eurasian Hoopoe at Petounta Point showed that migration continues to stutter into gear. On the beach there were four Kentish Plover. Nine Eurasian Curlew were near the Larnaca Sewage Pools and at least eight Calandra Lark were in the fields outside Pervolia.

Morning out at Athalassa and Panagia Stazousa, 7th February 2015

A good selection of ducks at Athalassa Dam this morning although only the Northern Shoveler and Eurasian Teal were obliging enough to be seen from the hide there. A female Tufted Duck, female Common Pochard and two male and a female Ferruginous Duck were present but could only be seen through the gaps in the waterside vegetation now that the water level is so high.

Singing Cyprus Warblers could be heard as I drove from Pyrga to Panagia Stazousa. I counted and saw at least 12 males and two females but heard several others as well.

Nicosia birding 1st January 2015

Arriving back in Cyprus late last night meant I didn’t get out as early as I wanted this morning so confined my birdwatching to Nicosia. Visited Athalassa Dam in the morning and Agios Sozomenos in the afternoon. Highlight at Athalassa was two Ferruginous Duck; with Finsch’s Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, a Peregrine Falcon and flocks of Spanish Sparrow the pick of the afternoon’s birding.

Akrotiri area this morning, 30th August 2014

Joined up with the BirdLife Cyprus field trip this morning at Akrotiri Salt Lake. The target species were Demoiselle Crane but there was no sign of these although a group of Greater Flamingo seen flying in the distance raised hopes for a few seconds. A couple of European Roller and a Lesser Grey Shrike were seen while scanning for the cranes. A good collection of birds were at Bishop’s Pool including a Black-tailed Godwit, some Ruff, several Wood and Green Sandpiper, Little Stint, some Yellow Wagtail and at least four Eleonora’s Falcon one of which perched in one of the eucalyptus trees for a while.

A Broad-billed Sandpiper was on Lady’s Mile with several Little Stint, three Common Ringed Plover and many Kentish Plover. A Eurasian Spoonbill was on the muddy mound at Zakaki where there was also a couple of Little Egret, a Squacco and a Purple Heron, a Ferruginous Duck and a Garganey, several Little Stint, a Green Sandpiper, two juvenile Collared Pratincole, some Black-winged Stilt and Spur-winged Lapwing. Several Eurasian Reed Warbler were in the reeds as was a Great Reed Warbler. A Common Kingfisher was fishing in the area.

Larnaca Sewage Works area today 7th May 2014

A big clearout of all the passerines from last night – not even a Spotted Flycatcher around. Just one Whinchat. There were several Turtle Doves and I heard European Bee-eaters passing over. A Marsh Harrier was putting the House Sparrows up from the surrounding fields.

On the Sewage Pools there were over 80 Ruff, some Little Stint, a Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper. More interesting were a single Ruddy Turnstone, two Ferruginous Duck, a male Garganey, a male Northern Shoveler and a Common Shelduck. A Little Tern was fishing offshore.

Larnaca area this morning, 5th April 2014

Did some leisurely birding around Larnaca this morning. Not a lot around the Sewage Works side of the Salt Lake, which is virtually dry, though did find a Greater Sand Plover, two Eurasian Stone Curlew, a Masked Shrike and a Common Nightingale in the area as well as three Ferruginous Duck, eighty Black-winged Stilt and over fifty Slender-billed Gull on the Sewage Pools. A female Pallid Harrier and second calendar year male Western Marsh Harrier were migrating over.

Petounta Point was also almost dry. I had another migrating Marsh Harrier as well as a Eurasian Hoopoe, a flava Yellow Wagtail and several Isabelline, Northern and Black-eared Wheatear. I decided to go to Kivisilli fields on the spur of the moment and was glad I did. A female Marsh Harrier was resting on a recently harvested field and a male Pallid Harrier flew over as soon as I drove in. Heading inland I saw several Kestrels around – most of those though were Common. Around 12.15pm a small group of birds gaining height caught my eye – at least ten Lesser Kestrel were in the group together with three female Pallid Harrier, another two female Marsh Harrier and best of all an immature Lesser Spotted Eagle. Was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. In the distance more Kestrels could be seen but it was now too hazy to tell if they were Common or Lesser.

Also in the fields were at least fifteen Greater Short-toed Lark, an Isabelline Wheatear, two Tree Pipit and two Tawny Pipit, a Hoopoe, a Masked Shrike and a Common Nightingale.

Akrotiri and Larnaca this weekend 1st & 2nd February 2014

Two very different days this weekend weatherwise. On Saturday I had been to Akrotiri on the BirdLife Cyprus field trip there. The number of Common Buzzard and Harriers in the area was notable – more than six Common Buzzard, at least four Western Marsh Harrier and two Hen Harrier. I arrived too late to see the Bittern, Eurasian Curlew and Bluethroat at Phassouri but caught up with a couple of Water Pipit there and then several Ferruginous Duck, a female Common Pochard and two female Northern Pintail at Bishop’s Pool.

I went to Kensington Cliffs late in the afternoon and enjoyed a fly-pass of two Griffon Vulture who were then joined in the air by a third and a Peregrine Falcon who was vying for attention. The sun shone and the sea was calm.

Completely different at Larnaca this morning. Rough sea and strong wind meant three Western Marsh Harriers were seen battling against the wind over the Sewage Works pools being mainly ignored by the hundreds of Northern Shoveler and Common Teal, the Mallard, Common Coot and Little Grebe which were there as usual. The Greylag Goose is still present as are the thirteen Greater White-fronted Geese. In with the other birds I found two Gadwall, five Wigeon and at least twelve Black-necked Grebe: two of which are now acquiring breeding plumage.

A flock of around a hundred Golden Plover flew over the area and as well as a single Heuglin’s Gull and eight Armenian Gull I also found three Eurasian Stone Curlew on the Airport Pools.

Limassol area this morning, 7th January 2014

There were several Western Marsh Harrier and Common Buzzard at Phassouri Reed Beds this morning together with at least twenty Water Pipit and a possible pair of Penduline Tit seen briefly in the reeds. There were two Common Snipe but no sign of the Great Snipe reported there earlier this week. On Akrotiri Gravel Pits there was a Reed Bunting, four Common Shelduck and twenty Golden Plover as well as more Marsh Harrier and another Common Buzzard.

At Bishop’s Pool there were at least four Ferruginous Duck, two Common Shelduck, a female Common Pochard, two female Northern Pintail as well as at least two Northern Shoveler and several Mallard and Common Teal.  There seemed to be even more Greater Flamingo on the Salt Lake than I saw last week – maybe up to 10,000 as well as many Common Shelduck. Only a small number of gulls at Lady’s Mile – twenty Armenian Gull (adults and juvenile) and around 50 Common Black-headed Gull.

At the Finikaria end of Germasogeia Dam there were many Chiffchaff in the reeds as well as a couple of Cetti’s coming out of the reeds to feed on the mud and also the bird of the morning – a Moustached Warbler – which kept low down at the base of the reeds but was visible during most of the time spent there. A Long-legged Buzzard was perched on a grassy slope nearby and the area was full of small passerines including Meadow Pipit, Stonechat, Chaffinch, Robin, Serin, Linnet as well as a Song Thrush and a couple of Blackbird.
