Cyprus Birding Tours Trip Report: Morning’s Guiding around Paphos 16th April 2015

The first of two morning’s out with Mike and Nancy, with the intention of seeing different species and visiting different habitats. We started at Paphos Sewage Works where we saw several Spur-winged Lapwing, two Eurasian Stone Curlew, at least one Eurasian Hoopoe and a singing male Sardinian Warbler. There were at least eight Turtle Doves on the wires near the Ezousas river mouth. On the water still left in the river bed we found three Glossy Ibis, some Little Egret and a Common Greenshank. We had good views of a Eurasian Reed Warbler high on one of the reeds and also a Cetti’s Warbler came out into the open for a chance.

Of course, we had to go to Mandria to find the male Caspian Plover that luckily was still there, as was the Eurasian Dotterel that has been keeping it company since Tuesday. We also watched a Black Francolin singing in response to another calling male and found a flock of more than twenty Greater Short-toed Lark and a couple of Northern Wheatear. There was a single Greater Short-toed Lark in the manure piles close to the mast behind Asprokremmos Dam.

We spent some time there watching two singing male Cyprus Warbler and also had brief views of a female. A pair of Spectacled Warbler was also in the area. Closer to the mast we found a Woodchat Shrike, at least seven Whinchat, more than fifteen Red-throated Pipit and several Ortolan Bunting. In the pine trees there we found several Eurasian Blackcap and some young Great Tits which seemed to be annoying a pair of Sardinian Warbler.

Cyprus Birding Tours Trip Report: Two mornings around Paphos, 2nd & 3rd March 2015

Two good mornings’ birding with Ann and Peter, continuing on from our day in Akrotiri two weeks ago. We visited a selection of sites in the Paphos area. Migrants not around yet in great numbers but we caught up with two male Finsch’s Wheatear at Anarita Park, two singing Cyprus Warblers at Asprokremmos, a soaring Long-legged Buzzard at Tsada and several Isabelline Wheatear at Mandria. Large flocks of finches especially Serin were at most of the sites we visited and at least thirty Woodlark were at Anarita. We also saw two Eurasian Hoopoe at Asprokremmos Dam, three Spur-winged Lapwing at Paphos Sewage Works, several large flocks of Corn Bunting and Spectacled Warbler at both Asprokremmos and Tsada.

Cyprus Birding Tours Trip Report – Day’s Guiding Paphos 17th April 2014

Michael had already seen some of his Cyprus target birds out birding before we met but we still had several to try and find on our day out. We visited Kouklia Soakaways, Asprokremmos Dam, Mandria, Agia Varvara and Anarita Park. We saw some interesting birds and had especially good views of an obliging male Cyprus Warbler near the Asprokremmos Dam who can and sang on bushes near us and a Great Spotted Cuckoo (one of at least seven in the area) at Anarita Park that walked along the track towards the car which we were standing next too.

We also found a Spectacled Warbler family at Asprokremmos; saw a pair of Stone Curlew at Kouklia where there were also at least two Great Reed Warbler and we had a fly past from a Long-legged Buzzard. A singing male Eurasian Blackbird was an unusual find. There were two Ortolan Bunting there and then another three at Asprokremmos Dam where we also found a Collared, Pied and Spotted Flycatcher and two European Bee-eater. On the water’s edge was a Purple Heron, a Black-winged Stilt and a couple of Great Cormorant.

Michael had hoped to see an Isabelline Wheatear and after finding a couple of female Northern Wheatear we were pleased to find a lone Isabelline Wheatear. We also found some Greater Short-toed Lark and a male and female Eastern Black-eared Wheatear. A male Black Francolin was very obliging, sitting on a small building out in the open and calling. As with everywhere else we visited there was at least one Woodchat Shrike and many Whinchat.

Although one of the soakaways at Agia Varvara had water we only managed to find a Wood Sandpiper so we moved on to Anarita Park. We were treated to at least twelve Lesser Kestrel and a male Montagu’s Harrier as soon as we arrived and moving into the area we also found a Little Owl, a couple of European Roller, a female Red-footed Falcon and a Wryneck. Our last target bird for the day was a Great Spotted Cuckoo and we were in for a treat. Not only did we find at least seven (and definitely no double counting!) in the fields near the rubbish tip but one of them decided to feed on the track where we were parked moving slowly towards us completely oblivious of our present. A really great end to a good day’s birding.

Desert Wheatears, Paphos area 7th March 2014

Found two male Desert Wheatears in the Paphos area yesterday. One was at Mandria and had been present for a few days. The other was at Paphos Headland.
